Healthy Lifestyle Habits for People Living with Diabetes

The best way to make the changes necessary to a healthy lifestyle is to develop a set of healthy habits. For instance, you should get up at the same time most mornings and have yourself a healthy low carbohydrate breakfast. Breakfast really is the most important part of the day.

Don't forget to begin a habit of testing your blood sugar before breakfast and every other meal and retesting two or three hours. Keep records. They will help you understand what foods spike your blood sugars and identify the foods that are safe for you to eat.

Establish a regular time for exercise or other healthy activities like gardening, walking in the park or swimming for fun. You'll soon be looking forward to that specified time of day when you can take a break and be active.  30 minutes of movement is easier to accomplish than strenuous exercise. Did you know that you need only spend 30 minutes per day in vigorous activity (like mowing the lawn or gardening) to control your diabetes? Furthermore, you need not spend your 30 minutes in one big session a day – three 10 minute sessions provides the same positive results.
  5. For lifestyle change involving what you eat just remember to eat a variety of vegetables and other foods, but limit your intake of simple sugars and high glycemic foods such as bread and pasta.
